What is the difference between a tent and a canopy?

A canopy is an open-sided shelter with a roof that provides shade and light rain cover, while a tent usually has walls or can be fitted with sidewalls for fuller enclosure. Canopies set up faster and suit markets and sports events. Tents suit longer events needing wind, privacy, or weather protection.

The line blurs with pop-ups. A Team Tents canopy is open on all four sides out of the box; zip on printed sidewalls and the same frame works as a tent. That's why one frame can cover a sunny Saturday market and a windy Friday night game.

Types of Tents and Canopies

Four styles cover most events. Here's how they differ, and which ones we make.

Pop-Up Canopies

A folding scissor-truss frame with the top already attached. You walk the frame open, raise the legs, and anchor it. Pop-ups are built for repeat events: markets, tailgates, sidelines, and booths that go up and come down the same day.

Frame Tents

Separate poles and fittings assembled into a frame, with a vinyl top tensioned over it. Frame tents have no center poles, cover larger spaces, and are usually staked or ballasted for multi-day use. Team Tents does not sell frame tents; they are mostly rented with a setup crew.

Party and Wedding Tents

Large frame or pole tents sized for seated guests, often with sidewalls, lighting, and flooring. Most are rented and installed by a tent company. A printed pop-up still has a place at a wedding as a welcome tent, bar, or gift table.

Custom Printed Canopies

A pop-up canopy with your logo, colors, and message dye-sublimation printed on the top and valance. This is what Team Tents makes: 10×10, 10×15, and 10×20 canopies on hex aluminum frames, with printed sidewalls to match.

Tent and Canopy Sizing Guide

Headcounts use common event-planning rules of thumb: about 8 sq ft per standing guest and about 12 sq ft per seated guest. Tables and displays take space away.

Guest count and size

Start with the space you're assigned. Most markets and lots sell 10×10 spots. Then check the headcount in the sizing guide below, and size up to a 10×20 if people and tables have to share the shade.

anchor

Weather and anchoring

Anchor every leg before anything else: weights or sandbags on pavement, stakes on grass, tie-downs where you can. Our 50mm frame is rated to 50 mph when anchored; the 40mm frame is for typical and shaded venues.

construction

Frame material (steel vs. aluminum)

Steel frames are cheaper and heavier, and rust once the coating chips. Aluminum is lighter and won't rust. Our frames are 40mm or 50mm hex aluminum; pick 50mm for daily use or windy sites.

water_drop

Top fabric and waterproofing

Look for a coated polyester top, not just "water-resistant." Our canopies and walls are 600D PU polyester: waterproof, UV-resistant, and flame retardant.

Budget

Retail steel canopies cost less up front but are built for occasional use. A custom printed Team Tents 10×10 starts at $850 with graphic design, the frame, and shipping included. Other sizes are quoted within one business day.

FAQ · TENTS AND CANOPIES

Tent and Canopy FAQs

Are pop-up canopies waterproof?

Some are, and some are only water-resistant, so check the fabric and coating before you buy. Team Tents canopies and sidewalls are 600D PU polyester, which is waterproof, UV-resistant, and flame retardant. In steady rain, tilt one corner lower so water runs off instead of pooling on the top.

How many people fit under a 10x10 canopy?

A 10x10 canopy covers 100 square feet. Using common event-planning rules of thumb, that fits about 12 people standing or about 8 seated. With a vendor table and display inside, plan for two or three people working the booth. Size up to a 10x20 for a team or a seated group.

How do I anchor a canopy in wind?

Anchor every leg before you do anything else: weights or sandbags on pavement, stakes on grass, and tie-down ropes from the corners where you can. Lower the legs in gusts and add sidewalls only after anchoring. Our 50mm frame is rated to 50 mph anchored; take the canopy down above that.

How do I clean and store a canopy?

Brush off dirt, then clean the top with mild soap, water, and a soft brush. Skip bleach and pressure washers. Let the canopy dry completely before it goes back in the bag, because packing it wet causes mildew. Store the bag indoors, off the ground, and away from direct sun.
