Canopy Frame: How to Choose the Right One
By Darrin DeTorres · Notice Me Marketing & Media · Updated
A canopy frame is the folding accordion (scissor-truss) skeleton of a pop-up canopy: four legs, the truss that joins them, and the center pole that raises the peak. Team Tents sells hex aluminum canopy frames on their own, in 10x10, 10x15, and 10x20, to replace a bent frame or to pair with a new printed top.
Bent a leg in the wind, or need a second frame for a top you already own? Order the frame alone. Need a new top too? See replacement canopy tops, or the complete 10 x 10 pop up canopy tent.

What is the best material for a canopy frame?
For a canopy that goes up more than a few times a year, aluminum. It's lighter to carry, it doesn't rust when the coating chips, and a hex aluminum leg resists twisting. Steel frames cost less and suit occasional backyard use, but they're heavier and rust at scratches and joints.
| Frame | Weight | Rust | Best For | Team Tents |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steel | Heaviest | Rusts where the coating chips | Occasional backyard use | Not sold by Team Tents |
| 40mm hex aluminum | Light enough for one person | Doesn't rust | Weekly use | 10x10 and 10x15 |
| 50mm hex aluminum | Heavier legs, still aluminum | Doesn't rust | Daily use and windy sites | 10x10, 10x15, and 10x20 |
Leg Size, Leg Style, and Truss
Leg size
Pop-up frames are named by the leg's width. A 40mm hex leg suits weekly use. A 50mm hex leg, with 2.0 mm walls, is the step up for daily setups and wind. See heavy duty canopies.
Straight leg vs. slant leg
Straight legs drop from the corners, so the whole footprint is shaded and sidewalls hang flush. Slant legs splay out and shade less ground than they take up. Every Team Tents frame is straight leg.
Truss
The accordion truss between the legs folds the whole frame into one piece, top attached, so nothing needs assembling. Sliders on each leg lock it open and set the height.

Buying a frame alone, fit, sizes, and delivery.
- Can I buy a canopy frame without a top?
- Yes. Team Tents sells 40mm and 50mm hex aluminum canopy frames on their own in 10x10, 10x15, and 10x20 (the 10x20 comes on the 50mm frame only). Frames are quoted like every order; add a printed top or sidewalls to the same quote if you need them.
- Will a Team Tents top fit my old canopy frame?
- Our printed tops and walls are made for our frames. Many standard straight-leg 10x10 and 10x20 frames are close, but corner fittings and peak heights vary by brand, so send a photo of your frame with your quote request and we'll tell you before anything prints.
- What size canopy frame do I need?
- Match the footprint you set up on. A 10x10 fits most market stalls and tailgate spots; a 10x20 is a double booth or a full team base. If you're replacing a frame under a top you already own, order the same size as the top.
- Is a 40mm or 50mm canopy frame better?
- The 40mm frame is lighter and is plenty for weekly use. The 50mm frame has thicker 2.0 mm walls on the legs and suits daily setups, open lots, and wind. Every 10x20 we sell is on the 50mm frame.
- How long does a canopy frame take to arrive?
- Ask on your quote. A frame ordered with a printed top ships with it, 10 to 14 business days after artwork approval and payment, plus transit.
